Wisdom Tooth Extractions Springfield
Helping Smiles Stay Healthy into Adulthood

Although our Paleolithic ancestors once utilized their wisdom teeth to help chew through tough meats and crunchy seeds and nuts, today, we don’t have much use for these third molars. Not only this, but they can also lead to pain and even increase many people’s risks of developing oral infections, which is why many dentists recommend that they get removed. Call our office today to schedule an examination and find out whether wisdom tooth extraction could benefit you.

Do Wisdom Teeth Always Need to Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth don’t always need to be removed. In fact, there are many situations in which we may not recommend extracting them, like if they aren’t causing any issues or don’t put your oral health at risk. The situations in which we may recommend removing them include:
- There’s not enough room in the mouth for them to grow in without causing orthodontic issues.
- They’re causing persistent and noticeable pain.
- They’re impacted below the gumline or growing in sideways.
- They put you at-risk for developing an oral infection.
The Wisdom Tooth Process

Extracting wisdom teeth can be a little bit different from removing regular erupted teeth. If the teeth are only partially visible, your dentist in Springfield will have to create a window to help separate the teeth into smaller pieces that are easier to remove. However, if the wisdom teeth are fully visible, we can lift them from their sockets and remove them from the mouth. We will then close up the extraction site to help promote proper healing and place gauze in the area to help the blood clot.
Before you leave, our team will provide you with a list of aftercare and hygiene instructions to help keep the site clean and prevent any post-operative complications, like dry socket or infection.
