Do I Need Sinus Surgery?

In the dental office, sinus surgery is often offered to add more bone to the upper jaw in order to allow for the placement of dental implants. This sinus surgery is not used to clear chronic congestion or other disorder that are more commonly addressed by your physician.
If you are in need of sinus surgery prior to the placement of dental implants, it is advised to have surgery performed about six months prior to implant placement. It will take this long for your jaw to heal. However, if you would like to avoid more than one surgery or do not have time for repeated visits sinus surgery can be performed at the same time as your implant placement.
Before undergoing sinus surgery, the dentist will conduct a thorough diagnostic screening of your sinuses and upper jaw area using panoramic x-rays. In other cases, a CT-Scan may be taken to measure the height and width of the sinus to verify that there is no active disease present.
Recovery from sinus surgery takes three to six months. It takes roughly this amount of time for the bone graft to fuse completely with the patient’s natural sinus bone. While complications are rare, the most common are risks from any surgery including infection, bleeding, scarring and inflammation.
