What is Dental Bone Regeneration?

At Taylor Street Dental Associates, our skilled dental team utilizes advanced surgical techniques to achieve excellent results for patients with inadequate bone composition.

Our approach uses precise surgical methods, including barrier membranes, to stimulate the growth of new bone and gum tissue in areas with low bone density. This approach encourages natural bone regeneration, establishing a solid base for dental implants and other restorative procedures. By promoting bone growth, we help patients achieve the dental support they need, enhancing both oral health and quality of life.

Why Bone Regeneration May Be Necessary

Losing bone structure in the jaw is more common than many people realize. When a tooth is lost, the bone underneath can shrink due to lack of stimulation, resulting in inadequate bone composition over time. This bone loss not only impacts the aesthetics of your face but also limits your options for restorative treatments like implants. Without sufficient bone support, placing an implant becomes difficult, as there isn’t a strong enough base to hold it securely.

Gum disease is another common cause of bone loss. Periodontal disease can damage both gums and bone, eventually leading to loosening or loss of teeth and additional complications if not addressed. Whether due to injury, disease, or tooth loss, restoring bone is often essential for patients looking to regain both function and aesthetics. Bone regeneration can provide a solution by rebuilding the necessary bone mass, allowing you to proceed with treatments that improve your oral health and appearance.

What Should I Expect With Bone Regeneration?

Local anesthesia will be administered to the treatment area, after which the doctor can proceed to make the incision on the gum tissue, right on the area overlying the degenerated bone. This flap is lifted away to expose the underlying bone, and the dental surgeon can proceed to graft the bone with bone grafts taken from other parts of the mouth or from synthetic sources.

The bone graft pieces that are placed directly on the indicated areas essentially act as scaffolding onto which new bone tissues can grow. The bone graft will then be covered with a thin barrier membrane to keep it in place right before the gum tissue is repositioned on top of it and stitched closed.

This technique has produced many great results and has helped promote bone regeneration in areas previously without sufficient bone structure.

What our patients have to say

“Very nice dental office with the latest technology. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Going to the dentist is actually a pleasant experience. Highly recommend them after years of being a patient!” – Jerry R.

How Long Does Bone Regeneration Take?

When using synthetic bone graphs, the bone regeneration process may take several months or longer to complete and is generally different for each patient. Although new bone tissues will immediately grow in the grafted area in the first few months, it takes longer for new bone tissues to mature, thrive, and completely fuse with the original bone in the alveolar bone ridge.

On the other hand, autologous bone grafts are believed to have shorter bone regeneration time because using the patient’s bone will have better tolerance from the surrounding tissues and promote faster healing. This technique may take about four months to get a successful bone regeneration.

After the bone regeneration process has successfully given way to new bone mass, the patient will become eligible to receive the dental implant.
