Treatment Options for Patients with various stages of Periodontal Disease
Created on October 30, 2018
Periodontal disease is an infection of the smile that can have serious implications and complications that can affect not only the mouth, but the entire body. At Taylor Street Dnetal, our professionals encourage patients to visit the office on a regular basis to monitor oral health and wellness for signs of this condition. Periodontal disease can be easily treated when intervened in the earliest of stages.
What are the signs of periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease has several noticeable signs that may indicate an issue. Common signs include:
- Bleeding gums
- Swollen and red gums
- Halitosis
- Loosening teeth
If any of these signs develop, it is essential that patients get to Taylor Street Dental for a full evaluation and to discuss their needs.
Treatment options for periodontal disease
The type of treatment needed for periodontal disease will vary greatly from patient to patient. This is because there are several different stages the condition can reach, and each stage may need to be addressed in a different manner. For example, the earlier stage of periodontal disease called gingivitis is the easiest to treat. Periodontal disease that has reached a later stage, called periodontitis, may require more extensive treatment. Gingivitis is treated with a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums at the dental office, while periodontitis may require a treatment called scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing is more invaisve but removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from all surfaces of the teeth. In addition, if there are bacterial concerns, then treatment such as antibiotics may be done as well. Antibiotics may either be applied directly into the smile or may be given as an oral prescription medication for patients to take over the course of time to treat the infection from the inside out.
