Tooth Brushing Tips
Created on December 30, 2014
Brushing your teeth is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to keep your smile healthy. However, you must be sure to brush correctly in order to achieve the most benefit from your time brushing. The dentists at Taylor Street Dental Associates are happy to offer our patients guidance on proper at-home dental care – including how to brush your teeth properly.
Brushing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to remove cavity-causing plaque and other debris from your teeth. However, in order for it to be effective you have to brush after every meal. You also have to brush your teeth for 2-3 minutes. Many patients believe that they do this. However if you were to time yourself you might find that you do not even spend an entire minute brushing your teeth!
Use short, circular motions across the surface of each of your teeth when brushing. Don’t forget those teeth way in the back. Using a compact head toothbrush can make brushing easier. Look for a brush that has a head no larger than 1” x .5” in size.
Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle while brushing. Many toothbrush designs feature angled handles making this easier to do. Choose toothbrushes with soft, round-headed bristles. Finally, you should plan to replace your toothbrush at least four times a year – more often if you have been sick.
