Tooth Fillings in Springfield & Longmeadow, MA Composite Fillings Springfield
What is a Cavity Filling?
Our office is entirely mercury-free, and we do not use metal fillings. Instead, we apply composite fillings made of thin, durable, tooth-colored resin to fill in teeth that have been injured or that have cavities. Composite fillings are virtually undetectable and make teeth more durable and stronger. Composite fillings are not only used for restoring decay but are also used for cosmetic improvements of the smile by changing the color of the teeth or reshaping disfigured teeth.
What is the Difference between Composite Fillings and Mercury (metal) Fillings?
1) Composite Fillings
Tooth-colored composite fillings have many advantages. Including a tight bond to the tooth, which can be used in cases where natural tooth structure has been lost. This strengthens the tooth and allows it to remain intact. Other pros include.
- Contains fluoride, which helps to prevent decay
- Healthier for your gums
- Aesthetic resin that matches natural teeth
- Tight bond to teeth
2) Mercury Fillings
The problem with metal fillings is that they contain mercury which can stain the teeth and gums due to corrosion and leakage.
They also have other drawbacks that result in the teeth not being fully protected, which means it will likely need to be refilled again later. The negatives of silver fillings include:
- 50% Mercury
- Wear on edges
- Expand, contract, and split
