What Causes Pain
The pain you experienced in sensitive teeth has to do with the exposure of the innermost part of your teeth — the dentin. It houses tiny tunnels which connect to the nerves inside the teeth. The enamel which is supposed to cover the dentin is often worn out when it comes to sensitive teeth thus the dentin exposure. When a tooth’s dentin are exposed, the nerves are easily stimulated from the food you eat.
Dentin exposure could result from the following:
-
gum recession/gum disease
-
acid erosion
-
tooth grinding
-
cracked tooth or filling
-
tooth bleaching
Treating Sensitive Teeth
-
It is very important to avoid further damage to sensitive teeth. Be gentle with your toothbrush strokes and try to avoid toothpaste labeled with abrasive chemicals.
-
Desensitizing toothpastes are most effective when massaged into the gums. These types of toothpastes block the tubules in your dentin so the nerves aren’t stimulated.
-
Your dentist could apply special fluoride gels, rinses or varnishes to the affected teeth. Other options include putting dental bonds or seals to cover the exposed dentin. If you grind your teeth at night, your dentist may recommend that you wear mouthguards at night.
