For Sedation Options Available for Patients in Springfield, MA
Created on October 30, 2019
At Taylor Street Dental, our dentists understand that many patients may have concerns about discomfort. Some patients have a deep-seated fear of the dentist, making it harder for them to commit to an appointment and be seen on a regular basis. The dentists in our practice are pleased to provide a variety of sedation options to make it easier than ever to get into the practice for necessary services.
What sedation options are available?
Patients in the area of Springfield, MA are encouraged to ask about our wide selection of sedation services for our adult patients. These include some of the following techniques:
- Nitrous oxide – nitrous oxide, typically referred to as “laughing gas,” is a way of relaxing patients for their appointment. It is administered when patients arrive in the dental chair. The odorless gas is administered through the nose and can provide almost instant relaxation for many patients. When the appointment is over, patients are given oxygen to reverse the effects of the gas.
- Oral medication – another option is that of oral medication, sometimes referred to as oral conscious sedation. This method of sedation uses pharmaceuticals that patients take prior to leaving their home for their appointment. Patients need to arrange transportation to and from their visit if they are considering goral conscious sedation. During the time the patients are under the influence of this medication, they are completely conscious but later, after resting, will have little or no recollection of their dental visit.
- Audio analgesia – a medication-free method of sedation such as audio analgesia is another option for our patients to consider. This is when patients relax in the dentist chair with a pair of headphones, listening to a specialized audio with white noise and stereophonic music that can distract patients from the procedure and result in sensory confusion.
- Movies on a screen – another method of distracting the patient is with the use of movies that are shown during the patient’s procedure. This can help the patient focus on the film instead of the dental procedure being performed.
