Advice for patients who are experiencing a toothache
Created on July 15, 2020
Toothaches are literally a pain! When patients are dealing with tooth pain, they may be unsure as to what has happened. This is when the team at Taylor Street Dental encourages patients to schedule an immediate visit to their office to determine the cause of the discomfort. Sometimes, a toothache may be just soreness from inflamed sinuses, while other times, it can be an indication of a much more severe issue. With the help of Drs. David Peck, Pablo Valestegui, and Mahmoud Homsi, patients can often get a same-day appointment to find out the cause of their problem.
What causes toothaches?
Toothaches can happen for a wide range of reasons. This is why it is important for patients to visit their dentist, to rule out any serious conditions that require immediate attention. If a problem is present, the dental team at Taylor Street Dental can help with proper treatment recommendations. Below are just a few of the reasons why patients may experience a toothache:
- An abscessed tooth
- Clenching/grinding of the teeth (bruxism)
- Sinus or ear infections
- Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ/TMD)
- Worn tooth enamel
- Periodontal disease
- Tooth decay/cavity
- Infected dental pulp
- Trauma/injury to the tooth
What do I do if I have a toothache?
The best way to address a toothache is to work with your dentist. Drs. David Peck, Pablo Velastegui, and Mahmoud Homsi will evaluate patients to find the source of the problem and provide appropriate treatment. This may require diagnostic imaging such as x-rays to look beyond where the eye can see. Treatment will be determined based on the source of the problem, but may include:
- Dental fillings
- Dental crowns
- Root canal therapy
- Dental bonding
- Oral appliance therapy
- Pain medications
We also accept many forms of dental insurance, and encourage patients who come in for emergency dental work to bring their dental insurance information with them to their appointment. This allows our front office team to apply any benefits appropriate to the final bill.
