The importance of flossing for diabetic patients
Created on August 15, 2021
Patients who have diabetes are at risk for a number of medical consequences if they do not effectively maintain their glucose levels. This is why maintenance of diabetes is so important for overall health. But did you know that patients with diabetes may also have certain complications associated with their oral health? The dentist at My Great Smile in Springfield, MA educate patients on the benefits of taking care of their smiles—especially those with diabetes.
How does diabetes impact oral health?
Patients with high blood glucose levels associated with diabetes are prone to additional problems with their smiles, including issues such as gum disease and tooth decay. The mouth naturally has bacteria. When starches and sugars in foods and beverages interact with the bacteria, it can cause the formation of a sticky film on the teeth called plaque. Plaque has acids that can contribute to the development of cavities on the natural tooth enamel, and leave patients at risk of a host of other oral health concerns. This includes gum disease, which diabetic patients are more at risk of developing when compared to non-diabetic patients. Patients with type 2 diabetes are known to be three times more likely to develop periodontal disease than others.
Fortunately, there are ways for diabetic patients to maintain their oral health, and it includes daily flossing.
Why flossing for diabetic patients?
Flossing removes food particles between teeth that can contribute to plaque development and in turn, increase a patient’s chances of developing tooth decay or periodontal disease. By removing food particles with flossing that cannot be removed with brushing alone, diabetic patients are taking a proactive approach to better oral health and wellness. Routine visits with the dentist are also recommended.
