How to Know if You Are a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers
Created on December 7, 2010
There are millions of people throughout the world that have less than perfect smiles. Most people do not have naturally straight and symmetrical teeth. As people age, their teeth become yellow and discolored. There are also many people out there that do not like the size or shape of their teeth. If any of these dental flaws describe your smile, you may be a good candidate for the placement of porcelain veneers. Veneers are ultrathin, tooth-like shells that are made of porcelain or ceramic materials. The veneers can be applied to a patient’s teeth to cover flaws or add more length and / or width to each tooth.
The Advantages of Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers can correct various dental flaws, including:
- Gaps or spaces between the teeth
- Chips
- Cracks
- Worn down teeth
- Uneven alignment of the teeth
- Yellowed teeth or discolorations
Custom Fabrication
The size, shape, and color of teeth are unique to each individual. That is why porcelain and composite resin veneers are custom crafted to fit each patient’s teeth and surrounding features. In most cases, your cosmetic dentist will take an impression of your teeth, and then send the mold and special instructions to the dental lab where your set of veneers will be fabricated.
The Veneers Procedure
During your first porcelain veneers appointment, your dentist will prepare your teeth for placement of the veneers by filing down some of your natural teeth’s structure. Then, a mold of your teeth is taken and sent to the dental lab. After about a week, you will return to visit your dentist so your veneers can be placed. During the second appointment, the veneers will be bonded to your teeth with a cement resin. The result is brighter, more beautiful smile that will last for years to come.
